help2read Superheroes Lead the way
A dull and vacant classroom in Bishop Lavis Primary School one of the most deprived areas in the Western Cape has been transformed into a bright, warm and colourful reading room thanks to the determination of help2read volunteer, Rhoda Amos.
The importance of libraries within schools sparked Rhoda’s tremendously inspirational idea to dedicate her time to a goal which will reap many rewards in the future and change the lives of many underprivileged children. With the help of a few volunteers, learners and Mrs Brown - Coordinating Teacher at the school, Rhoda was able to create a stunning new reading room for Bishop Lavis.
Within two weeks, Rhoda and her helpers managed to clean and brighten up the previously bare walls with a coat of fresh paint and fun pictures. Scatter cushions were donated to allow the children to sit comfortably while reading or playing games. The classroom was also refurbished with second hand desks and cupboards which were kindly sponsored by John Graham Primary School in Plumstead.
Rhoda had envisioned a place where children could enjoy reading in a clean and fun environment. The classroom is now a breath of fresh air for all the children at the school and the response from the children has been very positive. The learners now have a dedicated room for reading, with plenty of space to play and grow.
We hope Rhoda’s successes will pioneer the way forward and set an example for more creative and inspiring projects in the future. Thank you to Rhoda and all who contributed to the creation of this wonderful space which so many children will benefit from.
