On Thursday 12 March, help2read hosted its first annual fundraising dinner in Cape Town to generate support and create awareness of the organisation. It was also the start of raising the necessary funds to help 2 000 children read in 2009. “The event was well attended by various stakeholders including funders, schools, volunteers and individual members of the community. We received generous donations but more importantly, started raising the necessary awareness about help2read’s work,” says Janet Bruwer, general manager of help2read.

The dinner was held at the Riboville restaurant in Adderley Street, Cape Town. As part of the proceedings, a presentation was given by learners from Schotscheskloof Primary. “One learner read a poem, while another gave an account of their time spent with one of our volunteers,” a guest at the function commented. “It was hard to believe that these children had previously had reading problems. They seemed so confident!” help2read founder, Alex Moss, informed the 150 guests of help2read’s work and vision for the future – that all children leave primary school literate and enjoying reading. He explained that for each R1 000 the organisation raises, help2read can make a difference in one child’s life.

Local comedian Alan Committie was MC for the evening in addition to performing a live comedy set to the guests. “Alan was really great. We chose him because we wanted part of our key message for the evening to be that reading, books and learning can be fun,” says Janet.
