On Saturday 5 December, three of South Africa's favourite writers attended a fundraising lunch in support of help2read, a Cape Town child literacy charity, at La Cantina at the Palms Decor and Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock.

Over 100 people turned up to hear readings from Abigail Donnelly, the award winning food editor of Taste Magazine, Finuala Dowling, the poet and novelist, and Lauren Beukes, the author of 'Maverick – Extraordinary Women from South Africa's Past'. Alex Moss, the founder of help2read, thanked the three authors for giving up most of their day to the event and, amidst laughter, said that whilst help2read has provided the gift of literacy to over 5,000 disadvantaged Cape Town children, it seemed unlikely that this would produce much in the way of royalties for the writers until well into their old age, as almost all of the children were under the age of ten. He added that if help2read can continue to grow at its planned rate, by the time the three authors reached retirement age, there would be a very large number of potential readers to buy their works, so perhaps help2read will be able to say "we hope to be contributing towards their pensions"!
